How I beat adult acne - my skincare routineThursday, November 12, 2015
Don't worry, there will still be many blog posts about sewing etc. but I have plans to add the occasional post which falls more in the 'lifestyle' category. If it's not your thing, I promise I won't be offended if you skip this post ;)
When I was a teenager (and I don't even want to think about how long ago that was) I suffered from acne. Now, don't get me wrong, I was lucky actually, it could have been a lot worse - it was just an 'average' amount of whiteheads and blackheads really. But I always just assumed that it would eventually go away and I would have clear skin once into my twenties. I hadn't even realised that adults could get acne - I guess I never really thought about it! Well my twenties came and the spots stayed. Over the years I have tried a whole host of different spot treatments - from the cheap and cheerful to the more expensive, and perhaps they may have stopped things from getting worse, but they never completely cleared me from spots.
Back in 2011 I got engaged, and my thoughts turned to my wedding day and obviously I wanted the best possible skin on that day. I had also decided to save some money and do my own make-up (I talked about that in this post, if you are interested) - so I started watching You Tube videos. Enter Jaclyn Hill. Have you heard of her? If you have watched any make-up videos on You Tube then you more than likely have! She is a brilliant Make Up Artist (generally a little too OTT for me, but you pick up brilliant tips and techniques anyway), and hilarious to boot. Anyway, one of her videos about 2 years ago was on her skincare routine and this is where I discovered Mario Badescu. Unfortunately this is an American brand, which, as with a lot of things, is much more reasonably priced in the States than over here. But I did decide to give it a go after listening to Jaclyn's rave reviews. There aren't too many places you can get it over here, butif you are interested in trying it for yourself (and you live in the UK!) then I get it from Beauty Bay.
It is a bit more expensive than your average spot treatment at say, Boots, but for me it is totally worth it because since following this routine I have got rid of my adult acne completely and I could probably count on one hand the number of times I have had a spot in the past 4 years - and I put those down to pregnancy hormones anyway! Honestly, if you suffer from adult acne then do give these products a go because I have been totally blown away by them. Anyway, enough gushing, here's what I use:
My morning and nighttime routines are the same except for the moisturisers:
- I wash my face with Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel, which smells lovely and fresh and clean. It uses papaya extracts (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) to gently exfoliate the skin, but without the harsh abrasion that normal exfoliators can sometimes cause.
- I follow with the Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Lotion on a cotton pad as a toner. It contains Witch Hazel to declog pores and Seaweed and Aloe extracts to sooth red/sensitive skin.
- Once this is dried I then moisturise with either the Mario Badescu Hydrating Moisturiser with Biocare & Hyaluronic Acid if it's the morning or La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo at night. Both moisturisers go a long way so make sure you only use a tiny amount! I would prefer to have my day-time moisturiser to have SPF in it (they do do one that has this, but I haven't tried it yet), but my CC cream has SPF so I'm happy with that. And the Effaclar Duo is amazing. I started using this after I had already started my Mario Badescu regime, and although those products were working really well, this cream was just the final 'ingredient' I needed for great skin.
- The last point that I must make is a basic skincare routine that most of you will know, but is SO important - ALWAYS TAKE YOUR MAKE-UP OFF! Don't ever be tempted to go to bed with it on. Anytime I have done this I wake up with angry, spotty skin, so it's just not worth it! I also use a micellar water (the brand changes depending on the current deals!) with cotton pads rather than just a face wipe or baby wipe (which I used to use) as I find it gets more off. I'm still working on this though as I think I could use something more thorough (any suggestions, please let me know!).
So there you go - quite a long post for only 4 products! I've re-read this and it really sounds like I'm being paid to say all of this, by either Mario Badescu or Beauty Bay, but I'm not at all and it's all just a genuine review. I purely wanted to share in the hopes that it might help someone else. Let me know if you try any of these products out and how you get on, or let me know if you have ever suffered from adult acne and what you have found to work well for you!
